Were you expecting to see Adworthy? Unfortunately, we had to change the name of the company because of a similar company name in the USA.

But you live and learn! As you may know, we launched the business in just 7 days and so when choosing a name, I just naively jumped at the first name I liked. I probably should have spent some time looking for something else, but everything is a learning curve and so here is what inspired the name Blue Cliff Media and the lessons I’ve learned from all of this.

You may or may not know that I’m originally from the Shetland Islands, the most northern group of islands in the UK. Something I love about Shetland is that you’re never far away from the sea.

Another amazing thing about Shetland is the frighteningly tall cliffs, like the ones you can see here at a place called Eshaness.


A lot of my childhood involved climbing on cliffs and swimming in the North Sea. (To be fair, I still spend most of my time in the sea whenever I’m home). And that is where the name Blue Cliff comes from! I love going up to Shetland and just sitting on top of a huge cliff, looking out at the vast blue sea. There’s nothing quite like it.

Especially when you have little Puffin’s running around your feet!



Lessons learned during the name change:

1. Don’t be so naive

Yes, I was launching my business in 7 days. But there was no need to make such a rash decision about the business name. I should have done my research more thoroughly.


2. Having a great business name isn’t hugely important

I thought the name Adworthy was cool, but does that even matter anymore? Names like Virgin, Apple, Yahoo are just random words. They only mean something now because of the brand. Businesses are having to really think outside the box when it comes to business names now because everything is taken, so there’s lots of weird and wonderful name. It’s just not very important, in my opinion.

3. When you’re running a business, time is so valuable

When I was launching the business, I had no customers. All my time was spent on prospecting and marketing the business. I had time to think about things like a proper business name. Now that I have customers, I really shouldn’t be spending time on thinking of a new business name. If I had just thought about it more in the start, I’d have saved myself a lot of time and effort in the long run.

There you have it, that’s why I changed my name and the lessons I’ve learned from the mistake. It’s a bit annoying, but you know what? It’s a learning curve and I hope you learn something from it too. Everything always works out in the end.
