At Blue Cliff Media, we work with a wide range of companies in a wide range of sectors, including the food and drink sector. Cafe’s are lucky in that they naturally have a large source of rich content to share. Every day they’re baking cakes, making coffee and interacting with customers. Any cafe not using this opportunity on their social media pages are losing out.
The ones that are doing social well, will reap the benefits and I wanted to showcase some of the best Edinburgh-based cafes:
Social Bite is a social business that focuses on fresh, local, healthy food. They donate 100% of their profits to social causes in Scotland and throughout the world. There’s no doubt that they have an amazing story. Looking to take on the likes of Pret A Manger, Subway and Greggs, they plan to do it in a completely different way. This mission statement is already going to get them fans. However, they are also crushing it on social media and that’s why I’ve included them in my list.
At the time of writing they have 25,000 Facebook page likes and you only have to look at their cover image to see why they’re winning.
Getting celebrities, like George Clooney, into the cafe and posting that on social media is a genius move. Anyone who is a fan of the celebrity is going to share that post and perhaps visit the cafe.
Mimi’s bakehouse is an award winning bakery-cafe, located on the Shore in Leith. Their social media content is up there with the very best.
At the time of writing they have almost 17,000 likes. They also have over 25,000 people who have checked in, which makes me think they promote their social pages offline – something companies always forget to do.
They’re all about cakes, cupcakes, traybakes and scones. I’ve been there personally and their food is mouthwatering. That’s exactly what they share on their Facebook page: pictures of their cakes- making you want to visit!
The Blue Bear
The Blue bear is an award winning cafe-bar based in Canonmills, Edinburgh. They serve everything from brunch to afternoon teas and light bights. They even have a table tennis table!
At the time of writing they have almost 1,400 likes on Facebook, with a similar amount of people that have checked in.
As you can see, they post big pictures of their home-made scones and croissants. I’m not sure if it was intended or not, but they posted this picture in the morning – just in time to catch hungry people on their way to work. Very clever!
The Haven is a cosy wee cafe in Newhaven. It’s a really nice looking cafe and have a good number of likes at just over 2,000 at the time of writing. With over 150 reviews, they’re obviously very popular.
If I had to complain about their page, I’d like to see a logo that fitted properly and also more information on the ‘about’ tab of their page. However, their content makes up for that.
In fact, I’m tempted to go there right now looking at this Biscoff Biscuit cake! In all, they post regularly and it’s all unbelievable looking cakes and food. Always a winner. Just look at the comments they received on this picture! Content like this has the ability to turn one-off customers into fans.
The Piecebox cafe is based in Polwarth and opened in January 2011. They’ve recently had a revamp. I like the story they have behind their name. They state the name ‘Piecebox’ comes from their childhoods where their Dad’s and Grandfather’s would take their sandwiches to work in a box. ‘Piece’ meaning sandwich in Scotland.
At the time of writing, 780 people like the page, with over 1,200 check ins.
Their content is different to most of the other cafe’s in this list. Rather than sharing pictures of their own cakes etc. they’ve taken what I believe to be stock images and have added their own branding to them, like this:
Now, I think this is a great move in general. However, it’s important not to over kill it. It’s always a good idea to add your logo to images you share, but too much comes across as too corporate and not enough personality. Whereas a cafe should be bursting with personality!
They’re very consistent in their posting which is great to see.
And that brings me to the end of my list. For cafe’s they need to showcase what they do well: baking cakes, making great coffee, letting people relax in great surroundings. The experience a cafe wants to provide in real life should carry over to social media. If you want your cafe to feel homely, make sure your Facebook page does too.
