You may have been followed around on Facebook by an ad of me. If not, you probably will after reading this! I’ve set this ad up using Facebook’s clever retargeting function. It’s the same thing that the likes of Amazon use. Have you ever searched for something on Amazon, only for it to follow you around Facebook? That’s through retargeting. In this article, I’ll show you how I’ve set it up and how you can do the same.

1. Set up the Facebook pixel on your site

The first step is ensuring you have the Facebook pixel installed on your site. The Facebook pixel is a piece of Javascript code that goes on your website, enabling you to measure, optimise and build audiences.

You can find your Facebook pixel by going to your Facebook ads manager. Click on tools and then under actions, you’ll see view pixel code. If you’ve not already created your pixel, you’ll simply have to click the big button that allows you to.

Once you have your code, you can simply enter it in-between the header tags on your website. Or if you use WordPress, I reccomend you download the PixelYourSite plugin. It’ll place your pixel across your site for you.

You can then download a Google Chrome extension called Pixel Helper, which will tell you whether the pixel is working properly.

Create custom audience on Facebook

Now that we have the Facebook Pixel installed on your site, the next step is to create a custom audience from the pixel.

To do that, you want to click on tools, then audiences, then create audience, then custom audience. This will pop up.

When here, choose website traffic. Which then brings up this box.

When here, simply leave it to Anyone who visits your website, specific the number of days and name your audience. In my ad, I’ve got it set to 24 hours so people have the fact that they visited my site fresh in their memory!

3. Set up the ad, targeting people from your custom audience

Next, we need to set up the ad. I’m not going to go into full detail here because I’ve covered how to set up ads in this article. However, I chose the promote your page objective, like so:

Then you want to go ahead and choose your audience, which in this case is our website custom audience that we created! I’d leave the rest of the targeting to the standard.

Once we’ve created the ad, now you want to design the ad. With a promote your page campaign, there’s not much in terms of creative you can do other than editing the text and the image. You can see from my ad at the top, I created a video for the sole purpose of this advert, so you can do something similar. Or you could just have a generic image. The video just makes it stand out more and gets a lot more people talking about it!

4. Voila!

And there you have it! Once you’ve submitted your ad, anyone who visits your site will be served it. I just leave my campaign running all the time and quite often get people asking me how I did it and tweeting about it, which is pretty cool.

This ad is more just a little bit of fun. It’s also quite impressive to people who have never experienced retargeting ads. Give it a shot and let me know how you get on.
